What Is Permaculture Design

Permaculture design is a holistic approach to creating sustainable, productive, and harmonious gardens that work in sync with nature.

This page explains the approach. The service itself — analysis, design, construction, and maintenance — is described on the Permaculture Garden Design & Construction page. For an application of the same principles in a market context, see the permaculture article in the raspberry module.

What a permaculture garden is

Permaculture (from permanent agriculture) is a system for designing human habitats and agricultural systems that mimic natural ecosystems. The main goal is to create sustainable systems that meet human needs while caring for the earth and for people, and sharing the abundance.

In a permaculture garden:

  • Every element — plants, water, soil, animals — performs multiple functions.
  • Waste becomes a resource: composting, mulching, water recycling.
  • A balance is struck between productivity and minimal maintenance.
  • Biodiversity and the natural relationships between species are encouraged.

Core principles of permaculture design

  • Observe and interact — careful study of the terrain, climate, and ecosystem to make the best design decisions.
  • Capture and store energy — optimal use of sunlight, water, and soil resources through passive and active methods.
  • Obtain a yield — multifunctional use of plants and spaces for maximum productivity.
  • Use renewable resources — encouraging natural processes and minimising external inputs.
  • Recycle and minimise waste — everything in the garden finds a use, from organic waste to rainwater.
  • Integrate rather than segregate — the interconnections between elements are key to the stability and resilience of the system.

The three core values

"Permaculture is not just a model or a technique, but a comprehensible, scientific approach to designing human habitats. Every site has a unique set of elements, but permaculture design is always based on three core values: care for the earth, care for people, and sharing the abundance."

What applying the design includes

When the principles are applied to a specific site, the Permaculture Garden Design & Construction service includes:

  • Site and resource analysis — assessment of soil, water, microclimate, and the specific conditions of the place.
  • Individual design — a complete plan according to the client's needs and the site's possibilities: zoning, plant selection, water systems, composting, mulching.
  • Selection of suitable crops and guilds — choosing plants that interact favourably, creating guilds and polycultures for greater resilience and yield.
  • Infrastructure construction — beds, water systems (rain barrels, ponds), composters, paths, and other elements aligned with permaculture principles.
  • Training and consultation — practical guidance for maintaining and developing the garden.

Why choose permaculture design

  • Sustainability — the garden develops with minimal intervention, using natural processes to maintain fertility and plant health.
  • Economy — reduced costs for water, fertiliser, and labour through efficient use of resources.
  • Biodiversity and health — supports the development of beneficial insects, birds, and other organisms, creating a balanced ecosystem.
  • Personal fulfilment — the chance to enjoy a garden you created yourself, one that provides healthy food and peace in nature.
